What would you guys do in such a situation?

Parminder Singh, a resident of HSR Layout, Bangalore got an SMS alert on his mobile on August 4 at around 2.30 pm that three air tickets were purchased online from his card. "Three tickets were booked on Air Deccan. While two tickets were booked for Mumbai-Mangalore route the other one was for Mumbai-Chennai route for August 6," he said.

A shocked Singh immediately contacted the bank and informed them that he hadn't purchased any tickets and blocked the card immediately. He also got the complete details of the transaction. "I then contacted Air Deccan which said that they could not arrest anyone and that I had to go to the police," he said.

Lethargic cops - Pass the baton

"I alerted the Mico Layout police station about the racket and asked them to take immediate action," he said.

But the police lethargically said they couldn't do anything and asked Singh to approach the cyber crime police.

"When I asked them to contact the Mumbai police and catch the racketeers at Bangalore Airport, they said that the airport police may be able to help me," he said.

Parminder then called airport ACP B B Ashok Kumar. "He said he could not do anything and just hung up on me,".

Helpless airline - (are they really helpless! Countnt they have nabbed the culprits at the airport? They were the ones who issued them boarding passes.)

The Air Deccan security officer in Mumbai confronted the two men, Prajwal Shetty and Girish Shetty, who were travelling to Mangalore.

"But they had no power to arrest him. However, they took extra Rs 7,295 in cash which was the ticket fare and allowed them to travel. The money is with them. The airline authorities said that they would give that money to me after the bank contacts them," he said. The third person, Bhadrapur R, who was to travel to Chennai, didn't turn up.

"On August 6, I approached the cyber crime police. But they said credit card fraud crimes don't come under their purview and asked me to get back to the same police station. The billing address on my credit card was my office address which came under Mico Layout police station," he said.

Lost chance

Singh is sad that the police lost a golden chance to bust a racket. "If I had not collected the details, I would not have got at least half of my money," Singh said, adding that the police can still nab the people behind the racket as the Air Deccan security officials have the details.

Singh said they registered the complaint only after a senior police officer from the cyber crime directed them to register the complaint.

Solaris 9 Container on a Solaris 10 System using Zones

Hello folks, I finally managed to successfully install a Solaris 9 Container Zone on my Solaris 10 System. I would like to share the relevant information here.

MY HARDWARE -

Sun Fire 280R (2 x Ultra SPARC III+ at 1200MHz, 6GB RAM, 2 x 80GB HDD)
5 network interfaces - eri0, ce0, ce1, ce2, ce3

though i used only eri0 and ce0. Remaining, i will use later as and when the need arises.

MY SOFTWARE -

Solaris 10 OS - Update 5 (downloaded from sun.com and burned this sol-10-u5-ga-sparc-dvd.iso on a DVDROM)

Solaris 9.0 Container Application - (downloaded from sun.com this file named - s9containers-1_0-rr-solaris10-sparc.tar.gz)

Solaris 9.0 OS Image file - (downloaded from sun.com this file named - solaris9-image.flar)

MY OBJECTIVE -

To install Solaris 9 OS as a container on a Solaris 10 zone. We have some native apps on Solaris 9, so i need to check if that would work fine.

STEPS I FOLLOWED -

STEP 1 - Solaris 10 OS Installation on the System

Installed Solaris 10 update 5 on my Sun Fire 280R. Chose Entire Distribution and allocated my second 80GB HDD only for storing Zone data. So i formatted and mounted /zones on my second hard disk c1t1d0s2. I dedicated my first disk (c1t0d0) to run Solaris 10 exclusively. Installation was successful without a hitch. Below is my install configuration -

hostname - sol10
ip address - 10.10.8.46/24 (on eri0 interface)

plumbed my ce0 interface so that i can dedicate this to my solaris 9 zone that i would be creating in the next step.

globalzone # cat /etc/release
Solaris 10 5/08 s10s_u5wos_10 SPARC
Copyright 2008 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Use is subject to license terms.
Assembled 24 March 2008

globalzone #ifconfig ce0 plumb

STEP 2 - Install Solaris 9 Container Application 1.0

I uploaded the file s9containers-1_0-rr-solaris10-sparc.tar.gz to my home directory. Followed by which i gave the below commands to install the application.

globalzone # gunzip s9containers-1_0-rr-solaris10-sparc.tar.gz
globalzone # tar -xvf s9containers-1_0-rr-solaris10-sparc.tar
globalzone # cd ./s9containers-1_0-rr/Product
globalzone # pkgadd -d ./

The following packages are available:
1 SUNWs9brandk Solaris 9 Containers: solaris9 brand support RTU
(sparc) 11.10.0,REV=2008.04.24.03.37
2 SUNWs9brandr Solaris 9 Containers: solaris9 brand support (Root)
(sparc) 11.10.0,REV=2008.04.24.03.37
3 SUNWs9brandu Solaris 9 Containers: solaris9 brand support (Usr)
(sparc) 11.10.0,REV=2008.04.24.03.37

Select package(s) you wish to process (or 'all' to process
all packages). (default: all) [?,??,q]:

(select all and accept all the default parameters. the installation was successful.)

STEP 3 - Create Solaris 9 branded zone

After the system booted, i followed the below commands to create a branded solaris 9 zone.

globalzone # zonecfg -z solaris9
solaris9: No such zone configured
Use 'create' to begin configuring a new zone.
zonecfg:solaris9> create -b
zonecfg:solaris9> set brand=solaris9
zonecfg:solaris9> set autoboot=false
zonecfg:solaris9> set zonepath=/zones/solaris9
zonecfg:solaris9> add net
zonecfg:solaris9:net> set physical=ce0
zonecfg:solaris9:net> set address=10.10.8.91/24
zonecfg:solaris9:net> end
zonecfg:solaris9> info
zonename: solaris9
zonepath: /zones/solaris9
brand: solaris9
autoboot: false
bootargs:
pool:
limitpriv:
scheduling-class:
ip-type: shared
net:
address: 10.10.8.91/24
physical: ce0
zonecfg:solaris9> verify
zonecfg:solaris9> commit
zonecfg:solaris9> exit

STEP 4 - Installed Solaris 9 on the Branded Zone

I uploaded the file solaris9-image.flar to my home directory and performed the below commands to Install solaris 9 zone.

globalzone # zoneadm -z solaris9 install -u -a /export/home/vishal/solaris9-image.flar

STEP 5 - Configuring the Solaris 9 zone

Configuration process involves booting your zone, setting up your hostname, IP Address Configuration, TimeZone Settings, Naming Configuration etc.

globalzone # zoneadm -z solaris9 boot

globalzone # zoneadm list -cv
ID NAME STATUS PATH BRAND IP
0 global running / native shared
3 solaris9 running /zones/solaris9 solaris9 shared
globalzone # zlogin -C solaris9

[zlogin solaris console]

After this you will be asked to set up your hostname, IP Address, TimeZone Settings, Naming Configuration etc. After successfully completing this, the zone would reboot. After the system has rebooted, you are all set to go.

globalzone # zoneadm list -cv
ID NAME STATUS PATH BRAND IP
0 global running / native shared
3 solaris9 running /zones/solaris9 solaris9 shared

Mumbai Railways ~ Best Human Efficiency

I came across these cool videos. Thought of just linking em up.

Isn't this unusual? When i see this now, i really feel its magical. More than a thousand people boarded the train in less than 30 secs i believe. I was part many such scenes all my life. I miss traveling in them nowadays.

He lost Rs 50,000 as he suffered 1% less injury

(UNLUCKY: Narendra Lodhia suffered extensive injuries on the 6.07 Virar-bound local on July 11, 2006.)

Narendra Lodhia is not a student, but he knows the importance of one per cent. The 44-year-old damaged his hearing on July 11, 2006, when the 6.07 Virar-bound local he was in, blew up.

And, if being part of that disaster was not enough, the railway tribunal has refused to pay him the Rs 50,000 compensation, as he has suffered only 69 per cent injuries. The eligibility for compensation is 70 per cent.

"The blast and the deafening sound damaged my eardrums, cut one of my fingers and damaged my skull. The shrapnel injured my eyes and I have a permanent speech problem.
But the railway authorities have declared it to be 69 per cent and rejected my claim," said Lodhia.

Lodhia has certificates from JJ Hospital and Ali Jung Yavar Hospital at Bandra Kurla Complex about his disability, but the railway officials have not honoured them.

He's not alone

Lodhia who cannot hear without the help of hearing aids has also suffered professionally. He was working as a senior accountant with a religious trust in Mumbai Central during the time of the blast. According to him, the management brought in another person in his place and has not given him the due promotion.

According to former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya, who has compiled information on blast victims and has helped many get compensation, "Around 80 per cent of the victims have had hearing loss." There are around 65 people who have had successive surgeries for hearing loss, 200 people now depend on artificial hearing aids and 25 have undergone three to five surgeries in the last two years and are still unable to hear.

More Challenges for TATA Nano

Tata Motors may lose out on some future customers soon.

The cost of the Nano project at the Singur plant in West Bengal has shot up to Rs 2,000 crore, which is up by Rs 300 crore since January this year.

The initial project cost in 2006 was Rs 1,000 crore. The company says it has been forced into regressive mode due to waterlogging at the site during the monsson last year.

However, they are hopeful that they will meet the October deadline to roll out the car.

All this comes in the backdrop of protests against the project. On Friday, when Tata Motors Managing Director Ravi Kant visited the site, villagers protesting the acquisition of farmland by the state government, gave him a stormy reception.

According to reports, the Managing Director said over the last two years the company had overcome a number of challenges, which had resulted in cost overrun.

Twelve rounds of tear gas shells had to be fired by the police to disperse an agitating mob when Kant made his first site visit since the panchayat elections to the project site.

A company statement said that he was on a routine visit to assess the plant’s progress.

The plant has witnessed violent clashes in the recent past as villagers allege their land was forcefully taken from them.
